Re: CF-18 Replacement
Maybe this is a really dumb question, but who exactly do we intend to launch these new fighters against? The straying occasional Russian aircraft? The Talibans? The Somali pirates? I just haven't heard of Canadian aircraft involved in an actual fire fight since Gulf War I, almost 20 years ago, so I can't help but ask why do we need this extra expense?

Re: CF-18 Replacement
Quote:
As for Canadian CF-18 deployments since Operation Desert Storm: They operated twice over Bosnia-Herzegovina supporting Peacekeepers: Operation Mirador August to November 1997 (Aviano AFB, Italy) Operation Echo October 1998 to December 2000 (Aviano AFB, Italy) Operation Allied Force (June 1999) saw 18 CF-18's already deployed in Aviano take combat operations against targets in Serbia and Kosovo. WE accounted for 10% of the strike sorties even though we had one of the smallest deployments. There is continuing talk of deploying a small detachment of Hornets to Afghanistan in support of our troops in offering close air support. Domestically, and in support of the continent: We have an unspecified number of CF-18's on alert assigned to NORAD, with unfortunately in our times, not only to intercept the Russians but also other threats, including hijacked commercial airliners. Northern Sovereignty Patrols allow us to demonstrate our willingness to defend our northern territories as well as the resources there. Providing top cover (AKA Combat Air Patrols or CAP) to events such as global leader conferences (POTUS, G-8, Summit of the America's, G-20, Francophonie), as well as major global events such as the upcoming 2010 Vancouver Olympics. The thing that most people forget is that our military capabilities are like the side arm a police officer carries, or the guard dog that protects a property, just knowing the person has it 9/10 times is usually enough for a person thinking about doing something not to do it. I hope this answers your question why we need a capable combat air force.

I believe the F/A 18 Super Hornet best fits Canada's needs. However the govt should order 100 aircraft. Mind you someone commented on the Sukhoi SU 35 BM.. it's half the price and just as capable same deal with the MiG35. I'm sure the Americans wouldn't like the choice which is why we are going to get an American built product. Last edited by Gregster; 04-04-2010 at 10:39 AM. |
